If your high-school English teacher were to sit down and read your copywriting, she should lunge for her red pen. That’s how you know you’re writing good copy.

When you’re writing copy, you’re not writing a formal essay or scholarly article. You’re writing from one Average Joe to another. That means your copy should feel like a conversation with a friend.

Write like you talk.

Today’s new technology can help. If you struggle to write conversationally, try this…

  • Download a transcription app onto your phone. My favorite is Otter.ai.
  • Speak your copy out loud — don’t write it. The app will transcribe everything you’re saying.
  • Paste the transcript into a document, fill in any gaps, clean it up, and you’re ready to go.

You’ll have much more conversational-sounding copy than before. Best of all, it’ll sound like you.
