One key — but little talked about — ingredient can guarantee you hit your goals.
To explain it, let me share something I read years ago by Ramit Sethi.
It’s about a conversation he had with one of his blog readers.
My reader and I had an interesting email exchange. I asked readers, “What do you claim is important but you haven’t done it?”
She wrote back, telling me she wanted to run 3x per week, but couldn’t do it. I said, “Why not just run once per week?”
Her response: “I don’t see the point of running once a week.”
Think about that. She would dream about running three times a week…instead of actually running once per week.
Ramit’s story highlights a situation we face again and again as entrepreneurs.
An entrepreneur might lament, “Why haven’t I built a 7-figure business?” But instead, he might ask, “Why haven’t I built a 6-figure business yet?”
A freelancer might say, “I can’t bring myself to charge $100/hour like everyone says I should!” But she could raise her rate from $50 to $75 and go from there.
The key ingredient for hitting your goals? Humility.
It takes humility to look in the mirror and say, “You know what? I’m not that good — yet.”
To be clear, the “I need to be humble” message is NOT what we want to hear, but that’s kinda the point. It’s what we need.
Oh, my friend, I’ve been reminded of the need for humility too many times! You can be sure of that.
But here’s the catch…
If you’re like me and tend to beat yourself up when you fall short of your goals, here’s the rule for humility: No shame allowed. Why should you feel shame? Shame doesn’t need to enter the equation, and it sure doesn’t help.
It’s totally possible to acknowledge you’re bad at something (likely because you’re new at it) without feeling shame.
I’ve fallen into the “go big or go home” trap countless times. Today, humility sets me free. And it can do the same for you.
